Theory of heterogeneous viscoelasticity

2015

We review a new theory of viscoelasticity of a glass-forming viscous liquid near and below the glass transition. In our model we assume that each point in the material has a specific viscosity, which varies randomly in space according to a fluctuating activation free energy. We include a Maxwellian elastic term and assume that the corresponding shear modulus fluctuates as well with the same distribution as that of the activation barriers. The model is solved in coherent-potential approximation (CPA), for which a derivation is given. The theory predicts an Arrhenius-type temperature dependence of the viscosity in the vanishing-frequency limit, independent of the distribution of the activatio…

Characterization of a new natural fiber from Arundo donax L. as potential reinforcement of polymer composites.

2013

Abstract The aim of this paper is to study the possibility of using of Arundo donax L. fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites. The fibers are extracted from the outer part of the stem of the plant, which widely grows in Mediterranean area and is diffused all around the world. To use these lignocellulosic fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites, it is necessary to investigate their microstructure, chemical composition and mechanical properties. Therefore, the morphology of A. donax L. fibers was investigated through electron microscopy, the thermal behavior through thermogravimetric analysis and the real density through a helium pycnometer. The chemical composition of the natura…

Experimental Characterization of FSW T-Joints of Light Alloys

2007

Welding is playing a growing role in transport industry due to relevant advantages it allows. Friction Stir Welding is considered one of the most promising joining technologies, especially when it is applied to light alloys. Focusing attention on FSW of T-joints, several parameters have to be considered, and due to thermo-mechanical features of process, T joints need a dedicated approach. A set of previously developed experiments has shown that the tilt angle plays a relevant role in the joint strength. Furthermore it should be observed that T-joints are very often utilized in aerospace industries since the produced structures are composed of joined skins and stingers. Numerous data are rep…
